The Carbon Footprint of a Burger

America’s love of hamburgers contributes approximately 941 to 1023 pounds of greenhouse gas per person, per year — the rough equivalent of the annual carbon output from 7,500-15,000 SUVs, assuming 300 million U.S. citizens consumed the 3 burgers/week average.

On the other end of the spectrum, were the average American household to avoid red meat and dairy and, instead, consume a vegetarian diet or a diet including some chicken, fish, and eggs, the decline in greenhouse gas emissions would be equal to driving 8,000 fewer miles. That’s like driving from Miami to Seattle and back. See the rest of the article and 7 low-emission foods here

I am totally in love. As if I wasn’t already a huge BK fan, this has made it official!!

“Not just a tree, but a whole farm, grows in Brooklyn. Former E-Trade marketing manager Ben Flanner and New York Botanical Garden educational director Annie Novak started planting a whole salad full of veggie crops atop a former bagel factory in April.”  Check out the rest of the article at Serious Eats

 June 13, 2009 —

MICHELLE Obama wants it clear that she’s a no-fur first lady, too. After we revealed the other day how French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy wrote to PETA to clarify that she doesn’t wear fur coats and will give away any she receives, the Washington Times contacted President Obama‘s wife to weigh in. “Mrs. Obama does not wear fur,” her deputy press secretary, Semonti Mustaphi, confirmed. Why We Don’t Eat Animals

DONT eat animals

How amazing!! This is such a helpful tool to use with your kids or future children 🙂

Ruby Roth has written Why We Don’t Eat Animals: A Book About Vegans, Vegetarians, and All Living Things  — a children’s book discussing why millions of people choose to avoid animal products.

Check out the new video of author Ruby Roth discussing the book and the ideas that inspired her to write it.

“This is a powerful and important book. Farm animals have emotions similar to our pets and this is conveyed in Roth’s enchanting illustrations. It will make children – and their parents – think. But it will not lead to nightmares, rather respect and compassion for the creatures whose wellbeing is in our hands.”

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Memorial Service, June 14th

On May 18th, one of the three biggest influences on yoga in the West, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915 – 2009), moved on from this world at his home of Mysore in South India. Since then there has been many memorials and tributes to him. At the school where I practice, Jivamukti Yoga School, they held a fire ceremony the day after his passing followed by 12 days of continual chanting.

Eddie Stern, of Ashtanga Yoga New York, invites us all to join next weekend to remember his teacher.

“Among the great joys of the last years of his life was that he became reacquainted with his contemporaries, including Mr. Iyengar, Mr. Desikachar, A.G. Mohan, and Swami Dayananda.  In the spirit of the renewed friendships of these great yoga masters, we would like to extend and invitation to you, and to every yoga school in the NYC area, to come join us on June 14th, at 6 p.m., in remembering and celebrating the very great flash of lightening that was Pattabhi Jois.  In doing so, we honor the spirit of yoga which, in the scriptures, is compared to a great tree that provides shelter and shade to all who stand under it.”

Memorial service for Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Sunday, June 14th, 6-9 pm Stephen Weiss Studio 711 Greenwich St at the corner of Charles St. See more details here.
