Superfood Smoothie

We normally make smoothies in lieu of our usual Green Juices once or twice a week. They are so yummy and such a great treat! We make so many different variations but here is our most recent one. I never measure the ingredients when I put them in the Vita-mix, so below are approximates.

Superfood: Chia Seeds

chia.jpg

What are Chia Seeds?
Chia seed is an ancient superfood that was used for centuries prior to the Chia Pet. They were once a staple of the Incan, Mayan and Aztec cultures, as well as the Native Americans of the southwest.  Chia Seeds were used as an energy food and they were called “Indian Running Food” as the messengers would carry a pouch of them and only need a tablespoon to sustain them for 24 hours.

Nutritional Profile:

  • 2 x more protein than any other seed or grain
  • 5 x the calcium of milk and also contains the mineral boron, which acts as catalyst for the absorption and utilization of the calcium by the body.
  • 2 x the potassium as bananas
  • 3 x more iron than spinach
  • A wonderful ration of omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids
  • Complete source of Protein and provide all the essential amino acids
  • They become gelatinous when mixed with liquid due to the soluble fiber in the Chia. They can hold 9-12 times their weight in water and they absorb it very rapidly – in under 10 minutes.
  • High antioxidant content
  • The ‘Dieter’s Dream Food’ – it can be used as a Food Extender/Calorie Displacer. You can easily bulk up your normal recipes with Chia and only eat half the calories while getting so much more nutritious benefits.

Other benefits:

  • Extra energy, strength, endurance “Indian Running Food”
  • Balances blood sugar
  • Weight loss
  • Intestinal regularity
  • Slows the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar which helps the energy from food be released steadily into the body, diminishing the highs and lows and resulting in more endurance.
  • Water retention and hydration – this regulates the body’s absorption of nutrients more efficiently which keeps the level of electrolytes balanced.
  • Muscle and tissue builder
  • Easy to Digest
  • Inexpensive
  • Fast and Versatile

How to use Chia:
To make the basic gel add 1/3 cup of seeds to 2 cups of water. Whisk the mixture well, to avoid clumping, and then leave it in your fridge, in a sealed container. After 10 minutes you can begin to eat the gel but more of the nutrients will be easily accessible after a few hours. It will stay good for about three weeks. Having the gel in the fridge makes it easy to add to your recipes; smoothies, salad dressings, puddings, etc. Chia seeds will absorb any kind of liquid so you can use nut milks or fruit juices to vary the taste. You can also use whole seeds by putting them on top of your salads or in granola or by grinding them to add to almost anything.

Sunshine Joy Soup

sunshine soup

I love Natalia Rose and often find myself going back to her advice and her recipes. Here is a recipe for a go-to soup that she has in her book The Raw Food Detox Diet. She suggests having it as a snack or a meal. I thought it was enough for a meal, but I do like her suggestion of having it 30+ minutes before another meal. The soup was divine, I just loved it! It is super sweet, yet you know you are getting all that alfalfa and kale goodness. Like so many raw recipes, all that is required is to clean & cut the ingredients and then throw them in your Vitamix or blender and you are ready to enjoy! So simple and perfect!

Sunshine Joy Soup

2-3 servings
1 cup organic alfalfa sprouts
6 organic dates
2 cups fresh pineapple
3 leaves fresh kale, removed from stem
1-2 tablespoons packed fresh mint

Blend until very smooth. You may want to blend a few ice cubes as well so that the mixture does not heat up while blending. The soup is best when served immediately, but will last in refrigerator for 2 days.

My 100% Raw Month

As you know, I love my everyday Green Juice and I also love to juice feast/fast. I am just finishing up another 9 day long juice fast and as always loved it! I found myself wanting to munch a little bit, but other than that, totally painless. I was never hungry, just had the desire to snack. Since buying the dehydrator we have not turned it off so there are always delicious munchies around and they are so tempting! But I kept with it and when it ends, I am going to have a delicious smoothie for lunch from FreeFoods, Mathew Kenney’s midtown restaurant. Then a big, tasty avocado salad for dinner. I am so excited!

This month has been a big experiment for me. For the last 2 years or so I have mostly eaten “raw til dinner” – sometimes raw all day, but most nights I would have something cooked. I noticed this really wasn’t working for me and I wanted to try something new. So when I finished my last juice fast I went all raw for this whole month and ended with this juice fast. It was one of the best months ever!! I felt amazing and my body and mind were really happy. I knew I was on the right path. So although I don’t want to be too rigid in my life, I will continue to eat primarily raw. And when my body or mind really wants something else I will allow that. I want to always listen to my body. I am such a foodie I don’t think I could give up all other foods forever, so I will still have a treat every once in a while. I am very excited about this primarily raw diet. I do not remember a time when my body has felt so good and my mind has been so clear. My dreams are super vivid and I know it is because I am not weighed down by the heavy foods that I always ate at night.

Raw foods and juices are just so amazing! I love that they are totally unprocessed and full of life force and enzymes. Plus you can be super creative with them which is always fun for me.

I will still be cooking many vegan, vegetarian and meat meals for my amazing husband but also many, many raw ones. My husband likes raw food too, but not every night. This is not a problem for me as I love to be in the kitchen and there is nothing better than preparing my wonderful husband a meal full of my love!

Just a side note…A funny question that I have been getting my entire life (I have been a vegetarian since I was 7, so this is not unfamiliar territory at all!) has been, “Where do you get your protein?”. So ironic that people think you need to get protein from animal tissue. Greens are actually one of the best sources of instantly absorbable and alkaline proteins! Greens are loaded with amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. Cows eat grass in order to get all these nutrients, but we can just cut the cows out altogether and eat it ourselves. More importantly, as I am sure you have heard since it has been talked about so much these days, is that cows are rarely grass-fed anymore. So the once upon a time benefit of getting these phyto-nutrients from your meat is far reduced.

Pumpkin Pie in a Bowl Revisited by Natalia Rose

More from Natalia Rose! In her book Raw Food Life Force Energy  she has a great recipe called Pumpkin Pie in a Bowl. In her new book Detox for Women  which concentrates on limiting the intake of sweets to starve out Candida, which can wreak havoc all over your body if not properly handled! So she updates her recipe and calls it Pumpkin Pie in a Bowl Revisited. The basic difference is that in the original you use 4 dates* and in the revisited recipe you use stevia. If you are not familiar with stevia it is something great to check out. It is a natural plant that has sweet leaves. It has been used in the health and diabetic communities for years. My favorite brand (courtesy of Natalia Rose!) is NuNaturals.

I would not suggest this recipe if you are not a carrot fan or like carrot juice. But since I love both carrots and their juice this was a great one for me. Plus the gorgeous bright color is so appealing!!

Blended foods are so great for you and digestion. It is a perfect way to receive optimum nutrition that is simple for your body to digest. The most recognizable blended food item to picture is a smoothie. When we make smoothies in my house we always add greens to them to make sure we are getting the most nutritious meal we can. This soup is very similar, raw soups generally are just vegetable smoothies. They can be delicious and are really great for your body! I even drank my soup last night in a glass, so fun! You can make all sorts of recipes or try things out on your own. Blended foods are so incredibly easy! Take veggies, put in blender, enjoy! I don’t think it gets any easier!

* Dates are such a perfect food and nature’s sugar, but when trying to starve out Candida they should be avoided.

Pumpkin Pie in a Bowl Revisited

  • 1/2 Avocado
  • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

Blend to perfection 🙂

Natalia Rose’s Raw Caesar Dressing

Natalia Rose is such a super star! I love her and all her books. If you are a woman you should check out her new book Detox for Women. She has great ideas, fabulous recipes, and really explains everything about eating this way pretty simply. Her book The Raw Food Detox Diet was one of the first books that I read on Raw food. I already knew some about eating that way, but her book really opened the door for me. In her books there are always different levels of the diet and she is never saying go from meat to raw overnight. There is a simple, easy approach that I found so welcoming and loved it!

Here is one of her fabulous recipes from The Raw Food Detox Diet that is so delightful! I have another Caesar dressing posted that is very different and Delicious. This one has such a great flavor and plus it is Nut free!!! The flavor was almost an asian caesar because of the nama shoyu and the miso. So awesome! Enjoy, I did 🙂

Natalia Rose’s Raw Caesar Dressing caesar salad from natalia rose

1/4 cup cold-pressed olive oil
2 cloves garlic, chopped
4 medium stalks celery, cut into thirds
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 cup Nama Shoyu soy sauce
2 tablespoons sweet white miso
5 organic unsulfured dates, pitted
freshly ground pepper to taste

Blend all the ingredients in blender and serve over romaine lettuce. You can use less water for a thicker consistency to use as a mayo.

*** I also added Grape Tomatoes for color, and the fact that lately I cannot get enough of them! I have never been a huge tomato fan and now I find myself seeking out these little gems. SO sweet and Delicious!

Everyday Green Juice

green-juice

MMM!! There is nothing quite like a big glass of Delicious Green juice to wake your body up and fill it with a quick shot of instant goodness! My husband and I drink our green juice every morning and really feel the difference.

My go to recipe is:

  • 2 different heads of greens (kale, chard, romaine, etc.)
  • either a celery or cucumber base (3-5 stalks of celery or 1/2-whole cucumber)
  • 1-2 green apples

It is really very simple and the whole process from washing the greens, juicing to cleaning the juicer happens in less than 15 minutes! So there is no time excuse for me, unless I am truly rushing out the door and then I could always stop at a local juice place and order it up 🙂 I always try to use as many organic veggies as possible. We drink these raw and we want to get the maximum benefits, so organic is the only way to go!

I recently wrote a post on my Juice Feast  that has information on juicers and local NYC places to go.

Today I really love the juice that I made!! It is so yummy and sweet!

  • 2 heads of romaine
  • 1 head of kale
  • 1 green apple
  • 1 gala apple
  • 5 small carrots

I normally do not put carrots in because they are a high glycemic vegetable. (although most vegetables are really low glycemic in the actual index compared to other foods) But today I only had one green apple and was just mixing it up a bit. It is fun sometimes to just throw whatever you have in the fridge right into the juicer 🙂 It is also super fun to mix it up and try out different recipes.

My latest 10 Day Juice Feast

green-juice

I just finished a 10 day juice feast and loved it. I have done so many juice feasts over the last couple of years and they just get better and better! I feel so good, clean and light the whole time. I want to feel this way all the time. I have so much energy and I love knowing that I am really cleansing out my body. I drink between 64-80 ounces of green juice throughout the day and lots and lots of water and herbal tea. Many people drink 96 ounces for a juice fast and over a gallon for juice feasting, so you are not limited, as it is a juice feast 🙂 drink as much as you want and what you feel is right for you. Most of my feast I was drinking 64 ounces of juice. It really made me wonder and think about how full and satisfied I was feeling throughout the day. If all I needed was such a small amount of food, why do I eat more than this on a regular basis! I am sure the reason as my sister-in-law said, is that “Food is yummier than juice”. We go out to big dinners or the office orders in lunch, etc. In life you can always find an excuse. But I find that listening to my body and eating when it is hungry is the best route for me. The struggle is to know when to stop. I only need a small amount of food, but we live in America where even our salads are Huge! Something to work on….and I will 🙂

But back to my cleanse… I normally get my juices from 3 different sources. I make a lot of them myself in my fabulous Breville juicer.  It is wonderful having my own juicer at my home, but you do not need one, or you can get a less expensive model if you are not sure how much you will be using it. We make green juice in my house every morning, so for us this was a very worthwhile a great investment! During the feast, I strain this juice to make sure I am not ingesting any fibers. On normal morning we just go ahead and drink, as it will not affect you negatively. I also supplement my own juices from Liquiteria. Such a wonderful place, they sell fresh pressed juices (which is what I buy during the cleanse because they are made in the Norwalk Press*)  fresh-squeezed juices, smoothies and some delicious snacks and food! I am so lucky that this place is within walking distance from me, amazing! Plus, they even deliver to me! Then there is this great cleansing service called The Blueprint Cleanse.  I love them! Their juices are divine and they deliver them right to you (or you can pick them up) They deliver 6 fresh pressed juices (they use a Norwalk Press as well), 3 days at a time. What I do is I order 6 days of the juice and drink 4 of these juices a day which lasts me 8 days. As I said, I only need the 4 (64 ounces) juices a day and I want to give my body what is says. (unless it is really asking for a plate of nachos, which is ok to give in to every once in a while) So I use these 3 methods of attaining my juice throughout the duration.

The best part about juicing is how I feel. I have so much energy, the first couple of days I am bouncing off the walls. I know this is because normally 80% of our energy goes towards digestion and while I am juicing my body gives all that energy back to me! So incredible! I wake up feeling great and always try to remember the crazy vivid dreams I had. I love how clear my mind is in order to have these kinds of dreams!

During the juice feast I have gone out to lunches, dinner, events and even cook many meals for my family. People are always curious and say things like “I could never do that” or “I would be starving!” or “Are you sure you don’t mind me eating” or “How can you be around food!?”. Although a lot of people think they are not capable of doing these cleanses or feasts, I have seen many of these same people go for it, even just 3 days, and had pleasant experiences. I am literally NEVER hungry during the cleanse! I would probably go on like this forever if I didn’t love food so much, it feels sooo good and I am a little sad to end it. I have yet to take my first bite of food! But as I said before, it is a feast, so if you are feeling hungry, light-headed or just want more; drink more juice, it is that simple! Also I am feeling so good about what I am doing for myself that I can be anywhere, with people eating all sorts of food and feel great! I am not jealous of what they are eating or feel bad that I can’t eat; I know I am doing the best thing for me at that time. And let’s be serious, the food will always be there! You can have some when the juice feast is over.

On a daily basis drinking green juice is so good for you! It is like an instant shot of goodness and health everyday! I really feel it as all those live enzymes and nutrients enter your body and wake you up. If you do not feel you can do a juice cleanse, or are not able to, or even if you have done cleanses and juice feasts before; adding green juice to your diet at least once a day is something to consider or learn more about.

* The Norwalk Press uses a hydraulic press to extract pressed juice. This the single most nutritionally complete juice, containing 3 to 5 times more vitamins, minerals & enzymes than juice extracted any other way. They also have a shelf-life of up to 4 days when refrigerated. The one problem is that they are super expensive!

Liver/Gallbladder Flush

Yestrday I  finished up my second Liver/Gallbladder Flush. I first learned about the Liver/Gallbladder Flush about 3 years ago from my wonderful friend Katherine Irby. She is an amazing licensed acupuncturist and herbal medicine practitioner and she conducts a spring cleaning every April, which includes this flush. (www.bewellbk.com) I did this flush for the first time 3 years ago with Katherine and found it really successful. I eat mostly raw and love going on cleanses. I am on a mission to be pure and cleanse myself inside and out.

Although you may feel a little queasy during this cleanse, I think it is so important as it will help you optimize your health. I feel great knowing that I am getting rid of these gallstones from my body. I also feel extra successful because you actually see them leaving your body!

I feel really good about doing this flush because I know there are so many problems and diseases associated with having a fatty liver. By doing a gallbladder flush you take steps to restore your liver and improve your health. You can improve digestion, have more energy and vitality, improve emotional health, and have a younger body, a clearer mind, and a better life.

If you are interested below is what I did this weekend:

On Saturday I ate a normal breakfast and lunch. Three hours after I took two teaspoons of Epsom salts dissolved in one ounce of hot water. The taste was pretty unpleasant but I followed it up a little freshly squeezed citrus juice. Two hours later, I repeated this process. I had citrus fruits and freshly squeezed citrus juices for my evening meal. At bedtime, I had 1/2 cup of unrefined olive oil blended with 1/2 cup of citrus juice mix. I know it sounds intense, but using a straw to drink the mixture makes it so much more tolerable. After drinking the oil/citrus mixture I lied down immediately in bed on right side with my knees pulled up close to my chest for 30 minutes. I watched a movie with my husband so it really wasn’t so awful. Sunday morning, one hour before I ate breakfast, I took two teaspoons of Epsom salts dissolved in two ounces of hot water. It did not hurt when they come out as you are eliminating, but you might feel a bit queasy, but it is manageable. I was at home most of the day because I did not want to risk being in a public restroom, but I pretty much felt fine and ate a normal breakfast and lunch.

** I would suggest doing the flush on a Saturday evening so you can spend Sunday comfortably in your house. It is advisable to stay home the day you pass the stones. It is also advisable to do the flush in the evening so that you can go directly to bed.

** Do not drink liquids after you drink the oil until the next day.

If you are looking for more information, please read, ‘The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush’ by Andreas Moritz. This book outlines how to do the flush.

It is advised that you consult with a licensed health care professional when considering doing this cleanse.
